So how many paths do you have to choose from for the tension in a rope?

First, "tension" is force, not energy. There is no "energy" inherent in a rope. Nor does it make sense to ask if the "force" is "conservative" or not. If you have an object hanging by a rope, lift it up then back down, the energy of that object is conserved. But that is because gravity is a conservative force. If you were to drag an object around in a circle, pulling it by a rope across a rough surface, energy would NOT be conserved- that that is because the friction force of the surface is not conservative. It has nothing to do with the rope.
