I didn't say pure energy. Read what I said about Compton scattering. When you take all the energy out of a photon or any other wave, it isn't there any more. Hence Einstein's E=mc² paper: "If a body gives off the energy L in the form of radiation, its mass diminishes by L/c²". In electron-positron annihilation to gamma photons both bodies give off energy in the form of radiation, and then they aren't there any more.

That does not mean that energy is mass just as energy isn't enough to describe a particle... particles have various properties: energy, momentum, charge, weak hypercharge, and spin to name a few. Pure energy would not.
Think about a black hole's properties.

FYI: I'm not ignoring you... I'm at my parent's place taking care of my Mom (who just got a hip replacement) and my Father (who is blind and can't take care of her.) I haven't been able to get online for a couple of days and I'm likely to miss the next couple of days as well. I scan the Forum but I usually don't have time to answer anything beyond looking for spammers.

I'll admit that you did not say "pure energy" as I mentioned in my post. On the other hand you did say that "an electron is made (literally) from kinetic energy" and that "matter is made from energy." Neither of these statements are true and my objection to what you said is not semantics. Kinetic energy is a property of a particle in motion... it is not a separate entity of its own. In order to dig into what's going on in Compton scattering we need to talk about properties that are conserved: 4-momentum and spin are the two properties under consideration here. If you would like to start a new conversation about the Compton effect and it's subtleties please feel free. The same applies to your black hole comments. Go ahead and start a new thread. I agree with studiot... This conversation has gone far beyond the OP's comments. Thread closed. -Dan __________________ Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup. See the forum rules here.
