sound of falling water and bucket

If a bucket is hold under a tap and the tap is open to full the bucket with water, is it possible to understand from the sound of falling water either the bucket is full or not? Are you able to give explanation behind this?

I think this is an ideal opportunity for some experimentation.

Try it, and see if you can work out what causes the changes.

Certainly (from my memory of buckets I have filled) the sound does change.
The change is quite pronounced when the bucket is nearly empty,
but becomes more subtle as the bucket approaches capacity.

Falling Water

I can offer a first-hand answer to your question.

I draw my water supply from a bore-hole and pump it to a small, reservoir some 80-feet above my car park. At the top of this hill the small concrete reservior that holds about 1,500 gallons. When empty this chamber rings like a bell as water cascades into it. There is a distinct sound dependent on the empty space above the ater..

I have saved myself many a weary climb by finding a quiet place where I caan listen to that noise; with experience it is possible to judge (with surprising accuracy) just how much water we have in hand.
