It was a problem with my bowser - I see the images now.

If du/dx>0 the element gets stretched longer in the x-direction as it moves. If du/dx < 0 then the element gets squeezed in the x-direction. Similarly for the y-direction - the element stretches if dv/dy>0 and gets squeezed if dv/dt < 0. And if du/dx = - dv/dy then the element is stretched in the x-direction and squeezed in the y-direction by the same amount.
