restriction of pseudo riemannian metric

dear friends
I have a question if it possibe,
Given a pseudo riemannian manifold M with mertic g, and H an hypersurface of M then we have a restriction of the pseudo metric g on H, I want to know the diferent case of the restriction of a pseudo metric on an hypersurface. I want to know if this restriction is degenerate, non degenerate, spacelike , ...,
and if someone has links or docoments in this area
thank you
