problem

Can anybody help me with the problem in the attached file? what are the pj.pk, xk? Also the idea following to solve the problem?

Aren't the suffixes j and k just marking the other two directions orthogonal to the i direction and each other.

so pj and pk are components of momentum p in the j and k directions and xk is the position vector in the k direction.
