regarding the setting of variation of magnetic field experiment in the lab

Dear all,
in my lab the angle of compass in clockwise direction gives small value whereas anticlockwise direction.
how i can got equal value.

Surely this is not something as simple as ensuring the compass reads zero when there is no current flowing?
i.e. is the wire carrying the current that generates the magnetic field you are measuring aligned with the earths magnetic field?
