Oscillation laws

I am just starting out and I'm a little confused, so I would appreciate your help.
x=A*cos(w*t+alfa)
Is this the general simple harmonic motion law? or does this only apply for motion on the x axis, because I've seen the same law with sin instead of cos and it really confused me. Thank you!
