Nuclear physics

A reactor is producing nuclear energy at the rate of 30000KW.How many atoms of U-235 undergo fission per second?How many kg of U-235 would be used up in 1000 hr of operation.Assume an energy of 200 Mev is released per fission.(Avogadro number=6*10^26 atom/kg)

Mev = million electron volts ; convert to J . Let this be E joules.

30000 / E will give you the number of fissions per second.

(30000 / E ) x 1000 x 60 x 60 fissions will be required for 1000 hrs of
operation.


The mass of U-235 required will be


[(30000 / E ) x 1000 x 60 x 60 ] / 6*10^26 .
