Do you want the long answer or the short answer?

The short answer uses the analogy of a long rope with one end being waved up and down in such a way as to send ripples along the rope.
This is vertically polarised.
Now shake the rope from side to side, again sending ripples along the rope.
These are horizontally polarised.
