The disk is at rest when it is placed in contact with a conveyor belt moving at constant speed. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the disk and the belt is 0.2 and there is no bearing friction. a) Express the acceleration of the centre of mass of the body, and its angular acceleration b) Draw a free body diagram showing the applied forces and the equivalent force diagram showing the vector 'ma' or its components and 'Ia' c) Write the three equations of motion and use them to determine the angular acceleration of the disk while slipping occurs. ------------------------ HELP! Where should I start? Any help and advice would be very much appreciated, I need to hand this in tomorrow and have had a good crack at it without success!!
 Jan 7th 2009, 04:57 PM #2 Junior Member   Join Date: Oct 2008 Posts: 12 The first thing you should do is drawing a free body diagram. To me, there is gravity. It is balanced by a normal force from the belt the wheel is standing in. Since there is no bearing friction, the wheel won't tend to go up the slit. Finally, the only thing that acts in all this is the friction from the belt. The center of mass won't move but the wheel will have an angular acceleration. Now try to calculate all this. If you still have problems ask again for help.
