Unhappy Conducting shell charge

I'm looking at the charge and field lines created in and around a conducting sphere that encloses a net charge that is NOT centered in the shell. I understand how the electric field acts outside the sphere-as though all the charge was centered in the sphere. I also understand that the sphere then has evenly distributed charge along its surface equal to the enclosed charge. I also recognize that the charge distribution on the inside of the sphere's surface is NOT uniform due to the proximity of the charge to the shell. What I can't reconcile is how the inside and outside charge distributions cannot be the same. It seems counter intuitive, what's the physics behind it?

Conducting shell charge

This is a conducting sphere so the charge must be evenly distributed. The charge will induce an opposite charge on the inside of the conductor. Since the conductor carries no net charge there will be an opposite charge on the outside of the conductor. This charge on the outside will be the charge that causes the electric field to be observed outside of the conductor.
