As Benit indicates, the "solution" need not be unique, or single valued.
Indeed if it is a wave, it will be time varying.

Or the solution may be a bounding envelope (e.g. waves will be less than amplitude A but greater than amplitude B)

Without reading, analysing, and understanding the thesis I cant give you a definitive answer.
Frankly I am far too lazy (and have better things to do).

If you are required to understand this thesis, then it is up to you.
